Ingredients

Making your own meatball subs is easy, and the homemade results are so much better than the frozen variety. Here are the ingredients you'll need:

For the meatballs:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the sub sandwich:

  • 1 hoagie or French-style roll
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/4 cup marinara sauce
  • 4 slices mozzarella cheese
  • Optional: A handful of fresh basil leaves

Instructions

First, preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Grease a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese, garlic, egg, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Use your hands to mix until everything is evenly combined.

Form the mixture into a dozen 1-inch balls, and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through. Remove from oven and set aside.

While the meatballs are baking, you can make the sandwich. Slice the hoagie or French-style roll in half and brush the inside of each half with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the two halves of the roll, oil-side down. Cook for 3-4 minutes, or until golden brown and toasty. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

To assemble the sandwich, spread the marinara sauce on the toasted roll, then top with 4-6 meatballs. Place the slices of mozzarella cheese on top, then drizzle with the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Place the sandwich back in the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted.

Remove from the skillet and top with a few basil leaves, if desired. Serve hot. Enjoy!
