Ingredients
- 4 cups of granulated white sugar
- 2 cups of water
- Flavorings of your choice (optional)
- Food coloring (optional)
Instructions
1. In a medium-sized saucepan, bring the water to a boil. Once boiling, add the sugar, stirring continuously until all the sugar has dissolved. This should take about 5 minutes.
2. Reduce the heat to medium and allow the mixture to simmer. Continue stirring until the syrup thickens and starts to look like a syrup. This should take about 15 minutes.
3. Once the syrup has thickened, remove it from the heat and allow it to cool. Once it has cooled, add the flavorings and food coloring, if desired. Stir the mixture well until all the flavorings and food coloring are fully incorporated.
4. Pour the syrup into a glass jar or any other container with a lid. Place a few wooden skewers or sticks into the syrup and cover the jar with its lid. Place the jar in a cool, dark place and allow it to sit for about 5 days.
5. After 5 days, check on your rock candy. You should see crystals forming on the sticks and the syrup should be thick and syrupy. If the syrup is not thick enough, allow it to sit for a few more days until the desired consistency is reached.
6. Once the syrup is thick and syrupy and the crystals have formed, remove the sticks from the jar and allow the rock candy to dry. Once dry, break the rock candy into small pieces and store in an airtight container.
